Pets – whether these are dogs or cats or something else – are a staple in almost every home. This is because a pet can be a great companion and a loyal friend, above other things. If you are thinking of getting a pet of your own, it is likely that the first place you are considering is your local pet shop. Do you know, though, that there are other alternatives, such as local pet shelters? Animal shelters are everywhere; chances are, you have one in your town.

Most people think that animal shelters only house animals that were rescued from all forms of abuse; this is a grave misconception. The truth is, studies show that more than half of the animals in these centers are ones that have been cared for and loved by their previous owners and were turned over to shelters for valid reasons, such as the death of the owner or relocation to a place where animals are not allowed. Given this information, it is safe to assume that quite a number of animals in a typical animal shelter are housebroken, and maybe even trained to follow a set of instructions. If you go for pet adoption, then, you are saving yourself from the hassles of training a pet.

There are many people who recognize the problem of negligent pet owners and want to help save more animals. Although some people take in as many stray dogs and cats as they can, they are also aware that a bigger effort is needed to save more lives. Animal shelters, rescue organizations, and the Humane Society, do a lot toward protecting pets and finding them new homes, but what can you do to contribute to the cause? Have you ever considered car donation? There are several ways you can help animal rescue efforts by donating your used car.

Check with your local animal rescue organizations – some of them actually have vehicle donation programs where you hand over the keys to your old clunker and they either auction your car for sale or scrap it for usable parts that can be resold. Funds from your charitable car contribution are then used to provide low-cost pet spaying or neutering, preventing stray animals from reproducing more offspring that will not be properly taken care of, or the funds will provide food and housing for pets until they can be adopted.

First and foremost, if you have pets please make sure they are neutered if a male of spayed if a female. Other terms are fixed, altered, sterilized. Basically what you are doing when you alter your animal is preventing it from producing offspring. This is the number one most effective measure we can take to significantly reduce overpopulation of dogs and cats. Otherwise, the results will astound you on how many offspring one unfixed cat or one dog is capable of rearing in a lifetime. Go to any Humane Society website to look up the research numbers. I assure you it is tens of thousands per cat or dog adding to the gross population. Just think only one dog or cat could significantly add or not to the problem of overpopulation. So, we can either spay or neuter or cat or dog and save lives or we can allow them to reproduce and be responsible for several hundred or thousands of deaths. You chose which one you are more aligned with in your value system. For me, I would rather celebrate life than morn senseless deaths of innocent beloved creatures.
